Here's a political email I recently received. I know from experience that many emails are not 100% correct so I looked into this one and found a few things. First, Joseph Olson is a real Professor at Hamline (not Hemline) University School of Law. But according to his own page at Hamline, Olson says he did NOT write this email!

A: This chain e-mail is a hoax. The "statistics" are grossly incorrect, and Prof. Olson says he didn’t write it.

Democrats: 19
Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by:
Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by:
Democrats:127 million
Republicans:143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory won by Republicans was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare.

Professor Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.

Pastor Removal

This one has been going around for years! When I got it recently, it had nearly 1000 signatures in its body. I did not sign it, after reading the related Snopes article. It's just another Urban Legend!

... the [FCC] is enjoined by the First Amendment to observe a stance of neutrality toward religion, acting neither to promote nor inhibit religion.

The FCC has no authority to ban religious programming. It literally is a myth.

Despite ... claims that Dr. Dobson is soliciting Christians to sign a petition to counter RM-2493, he has denied any involvement with this.

Pastor Removal from Television

Removal of Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah and other pastors from the airwaves.

An organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D.C. Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America. They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand!

If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped. This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs and Christmas carols from public schools! You as a Christian can help!

We are praying for at least 1 million signatures. This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country. As Christians, we must unite on this.

Please don't take this lightly. We ignored one lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation. Please stand up for your religious freedom and Met your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and "bingo" - your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This swindle is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Reminder & good advice from SNOPES:

Do not give out bank account, social security, or credit card numbers over the phone if you didn't initiate the call, whether it be someone trying to sell you something or someone who claims to be from a bank or government department.
If such callers insist upon "verifying" information with you, make THEM READ THEIR DATA TO YOU, and you can say yes or no to confirm, rather than the other way around.

Simple self-defense - All should read this (very good !!!!!)

I recently received this email which suggests a good form a self-defense in the event of an attack in your home or office. But Snopes.com reviewed this advice and made some good points. Read the email and read the Snopes article on it, and then decide for yourself if this is something that might be helpful...

Never would have thought of it !!!

I have a friend who is a receptionist in a church in a high risk area who was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection.

Snopes.com has an article about this email. They suggest that pepper spray is a more effective disabling agent than wasp spray and certain pepper spray products do shoot a long distance. They also mention that using wasp spray may not be legal in certain areas and may end up being more harmful than expected. You just read the email, now read the Snopes article and decide for yourself if you want to act on this.

B. Hussein Obama

Here's an email that claims to provide information about Barack Obama. It states that it's contents have been checked out on Snopes.com and "It is factual." Actually, there IS a Snopes Story on this email but Snopes claims that it is False! Read more about Barack Obama on Snopes. Learn more about Barack Hussein Obama at this Wikipedia article about him.

Here's another interesting story going around about Obama. It has been reported that Raila Odinga of Kenya is his cousin. Allegedly, the two are close and speak by phone often. The Kenyan government accused supporters of Odinga of behind the protests in Kenya over the recent election that have left over a thosand people dead. It is further alleged that Odinga recently signed a memorandum of understanding between himself and Muslim leaders. It states, among other things, that Odinga will "Within 6 months re-write the Constitution of Kenya to recognize Shariah as the only true law sanctioned by the Holy Quran for Muslim declared regions."

What does all this mean? It means that voters will need to educate themselves about all aspects of whichever candidates become their party's choices to run for President in the upcoming 2008 election. Research what each candidate stands for and who they associate with. Make an educated choice when you enter the polling place to vote in November. Please don't decide who to vote for on the basis of one email!

Who is Barack Obama?

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born

in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM

from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white Athiest from

Wichita, Kansas.

Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two

years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His

mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia.

When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama

attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a

Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is

quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also

attended Catholic school."

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that

that he is not a radical.

Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this

influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned

to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct

influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham,

introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school

in Jakarta.

Wahabism is the RADICAL ISLAMIC teaching that is followed by the Muslim

terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since

it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major

public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined

the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim

background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he

DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegience nor

will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands

over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches.

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential

candidacy.

• All schools in the UK have stopped teaching about the Holocaust in their history classes: False.
• One history department in a northern UK city stopped teaching about the Holocaust because it wished to avoid confronting anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils: True.

It's a heart wrenching email - who wouldn't want to help a mother find her missing daughter. But don't worry, Ashley is NOT missing! The email seems fishy from the start, it doesn't provide the kind of information that a legitimate Amber Alert would have.

According to snopes.com:

...All we're provided with is the ambiguous statement that a "Deli manager from Philadelphia, Pa" has a 13-year-old daughter who has been missing "for two weeks," and even that information seems to have been tacked on to the message by someone other than its originator. It even includes phrases taken word-for-word from previous missing child hoax e-mails, such as Christopher John Mineo and Kelsey Brooke Jones.

Meanwhile, the one piece of identifying information provided in the message, a yahoo.com e-mail address, produces a "no such user" error when mail is sent to it, and a variety of searches through news accounts and law enforcement and missing child web sites, including the site of the Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), fails to turn up any mention of a missing girl named "Ashley Flores."

So is there a real Ashley Flores? According to About.com Urban Legends:

Though she hasn't really gone missing, it does appear that Ashley Flores
exists, and lives in Philadelphia. Tracking links from a version of the missing
person alert posted on MySpace.com, I found an exact match ... [of her picture] ... The images were posted by someone using the screen name "Vixter609," whom I found blogging under the same alias on MySpace.com, with her given name listed as "Vicki," her age as 17, and her city of residence as Philadelphia.

When I contacted Vicki to ask what, if anything, she knew about Ashley Flores and her status as a "missing person," I received the following reply (reproduced verbatim):

ashley flores is not missing it was a merly a joke that got completely out of hand please imform everyone that e-mail that she is NOT missing it was a joke im sorry about any confusion

Beware of chain letters like these. Check them out before forwarding them. Why pass along incorrect information?

I heard from word of mouth about how Starbucks said they didn't support the war and all. I was having enough of that kind of talk and didn't do my research properly like I should have. This is not true. Starbucks supports the men and women in uniform. They have personally contacted me and I have been sent many of their Company's policy on this issue. So I apologize for this quick wrong letter I sent out to you. Now I ask that you all pass this email around to everyone you passed the last one to. Thank you very much for understanding about this.

Guess I will not be drinking Starbucks any more. Recently Marines in Iraq wrote to Starbucks because they wanted to let them know how much they liked their coffees and to request that they send some of it to the troops there.

Starbucks replied, telling the Marines thank you for their support of their business, but that Starbucks does not support the war, nor anyone in it, and that they would not send the troops their brand of coffee.

So as not to offend Starbucks, maybe we should not support them by buying any of their products! I feel we should get this out in the open. I know this war might not be very popular with some folks, but that doesn't mean we don't support the boys on the ground fighting street-to-street and house-to-house.

If you feel the same as I do then pass this along, or you can discard it and no one will ever know. Thanks very much for your support. I know you'll all be there again when I deploy once more.
